The Power of Relationships in the Language Classroom

The Unseen Curriculum

A common assumption is that the primary driver of effective instruction comprises clear explanations, well-designed tasks, and high-quality materials, all encapsulated within a course syllabus and the visible classroom. In addition to these elements, there is a set of powerful social and emotional dynamics that determine whether learners feel safe, seen, and willing to engage in learning—no matter how motivated they may feel—the invisible classroom. For many learners, especially those in language classrooms, the difference between staying silent and speaking, between going through the motions and fully engaging, rests on how safe the classroom feels, how seen the students feel, and how well they can connect with their peers (Vidrine-Isbell, 2017).

Motivation Matters

Engagement is the active participation of learners in thinking, feeling, and doing. Without engagement, no matter how motivated a student might be, participation remains unrealized. Research indicates that engagement can be fostered through crafting relevant interactions (Wen, et al., 2021) and by drawing on psychological foundations and storytelling to hold attention (Mercer & Dörnyei, 2020), demonstrating that engagement is not spontaneous but something teachers can intentionally plan for.

Introducing MBE

The field of Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) combines psychology, neuroscience, and pedagogy to explain how learning happens in the brain and what constitutes effective teaching. Insights from these disciplines show how teachers can reduce threats, signal safety, target attention, leverage motivation, and build social connection. In this article, I introduce MBE perspectives on classroom relationships and outline strategies to improve participation, deepen learning, and support well-being.

Why relationships matter

Relationships are the foundation for cognitive, emotional, and behavioral change in the classroom. The following section explores how positive social connections and low-threat environments prepare the brain for engagement, motivation, and learning.

The Social Brain: Wired to Connect

Supportive relationships and low-threat environments impact attention, memory, and language by physically changing the brain. By engaging in these supportive social relationships, learners manage stress, focus attention, and build new neural pathways. In other words, we first learn through social interaction, by connecting with others, and only then develop individual cognitive skills. The key point is the extent to which we process and internalize these interactions. When relationships feel unsafe or disconnected, stress can block the process of internalization and hinder cognitive functioning (Catrambone et al., 2025)

Neuroception: Safety vs. Threat

Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory (2003) proposes a neurobiological reason behind this effect. According to his concept of neuroception, our unconscious mind constantly scans the environment for signs of safety or threat. When we feel calm, the parasympathetic nervous system promotes relaxation and engagement. When we sense danger, the sympathetic nervous system heightens stress to prepare us for action, releasing cortisol to sharpen attention toward perceived threats. While cortisol is useful for problem-solving or quick responses, high levels can block new learning and cloud clear thinking (Cozolino, 2014). This is why teachers play a crucial role in creating predictable routines, low-stress environments, and challenges framed as opportunities, not threats.

Learning and Motivation

Encouragement combined with the right level of challenge can trigger brain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin which boost energy, focus, and a sense of well-being (Kelly, 2011). Other natural chemicals, such as endorphins released during laughter, play, or exercise, can also spark a sense of well-being.  More simply, social interaction itself is rewarding as cooperation activates the brain’s reward systems as our brains are “built to take pleasure in cooperating and helping others.” (Lieberman, 2013, p. 91). When learners feel liked and accepted, brain regions linked to pleasure and social approval become active in releasing these chemicals. In turn, well-structured collaborative activities in the classroom feel motivating and enjoyable.

Emotion and Cognition

Learning depends on emotion, and emotion depends on our sense of safety and threat (Immordino-Yang, 2015). Enjoyment boosts curiosity, and curiosity boosts enjoyment. Anxiety drains attention, and attention drains when boredom begins. To support our learners, we must engage them in learning. Play, storytelling, and emotional attunement are not extras to be added to tuition; they are essentials because they are what makes learning possible.

Neuroplasticity

Our brains reorganize themselves through practice, feedback, and reflection. The brain has the ability to form new neural connections in response to experiences, a process called neuroplasticity (Immordino-Yang, 2015). The term “plastic” refers to the malleable nature of the brain and how it is constantly changing in response to learning (Cozolino, 2013). Practice, for the brain, is the repetitive activation of specific neural pathways that make stronger and faster circuits in the brain, facilitating recall and application of learning.

Feedback refines this process by drawing attention to prediction errors and guiding us toward more accurate predictions in the future (Catrambone et al., 2025). Reflection adds a metacognitive dimension that helps learners monitor and assess their learning processes which can lead to better outcomes (Immordino-Yang, 2015) when learners are tasked with explaining and articulating their thoughts (Wen, et al., 2021). For teachers, this means that normalizing error-making and praising persistence can help learners feel safe to engage.

Try It Tomorrow: Ready, Set, Relate!

So far in this section, we’ve looked at some of the brain-based areas that are fundamental to understanding why relationships require our attention as educators. The core idea is that lowering a learner’s perception of threat can focus their attention and create conditions for success. To conclude, consider these practical ideas to use in class.

Step 1: 4-7-8 Breathing (Relaxation and Affective Engagement) 

Take several deep breaths and count as you do. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, hold it for a count of 7 (less if you can’t), and breathe out for a count of 8. Repeat this 3 to 4 times. Doing this too much might make some students feel light-headed.

Step 2: Thumbs Check-In (Reducing Public Apprehension) 

Ask groups to give a thumbs-up, thumbs-sideways, or thumbs-down to signal readiness in a way that reduces anxiety and helps you make sure everyone is ready and clear on what to do.

Step 3: Group Roles (Involvement and Equity) 

Assign each student a group role for the class. For example, leader, notetaker, timekeeper, and encourager. This will keep everyone involved.

Step 4: State the Outcome (Clarity, Security, and Motivation)

Give learners a clear and measurable goal for each class session or activity. For example, “By the end of this activity, your group will compare two solutions in three sentences.” Jane Willis (1996) notes that clarity and security are often achieved by using numbers in instructions.

Teacher – Student Relationships

How students relate to us as teachers influences how they relate to the work they do in class and how they relate to each other. If we maintain caring and consistent teacher-student relationships, it can improve engagement, persistence, and achievement. In terms of Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) the teacher regulates the classroom environment, primes attention, and maximizes conditions that promote learning.

Approachability and Empathy

Teachers who aim to foster engagement make themselves physically available and approachable to learners. This can mean being visible beyond formal “office hours,” such as spending time in shared spaces like the cafeteria. Equally, learning students’ names acknowledges them as individuals and, as Nerenberg (2020, p. 170) notes, creates a “deep feeling of being seen” that helps reduce anxiety.

Inside the classroom, coursebooks often include group work, but without teacher support students may lack the strategies to sustain dialogue. Teachers should model active, non-interruptive listening and provide phrases for clarifying, showing understanding, or summarizing turns (Adams, 2018). Finally, engagement grows when tasks connect to learners’ interests and experiences. Teachers can foster this connection in several ways:

    1. Conduct a short first-class survey as a preliminary needs analysis to uncover interests,
    2. Assign a short language learning history exercise to explore personal experiences, or trajectory grid (Choi & Slaughter, 2021), or
    3. Use a simple mindset survey to gauge beliefs about learning ((Magee, 2025).

Autonomy and Choice

Supporting learner autonomy means moving beyond tightly controlled instruction and allowing students genuine opportunities to shape their own learning. When teachers provide choices, whether in topic, product, grouping, or tools, they meet a learner’s psychological need for autonomy, which is linked to intrinsic motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Learners who feel they have voice and agency are more likely to persist, regulate their own effort, and engage more deeply with learning.

Autonomy and choice do not mean giving up structure. In fact, clear frameworks paired with real choices help learners balance freedom with direction. For example, a teacher may set the same learning goal for the class but allow students to choose how they demonstrate their understanding, such as a short paragraph, recording, or basic infographic (Catrambone, et al., 2025). Asking students to explain why their chosen format fits the goal strengthens metacognitive awareness and helps them see themselves as active agents in the learning process (Immordino-Yang, 2015)

Harvard University’s Project Zero website has many activities that foster learner autonomy. The site curates teacher-submitted materials and makes them searchable, allowing educators to find ideas, activities, and research-informed resources that promote learner choice and reflection. Inviting students to make micro-decisions (e.g., format selection) or macro-decisions (e.g., task design), can result in a stronger sense of ownership and engagement. Marc Helgesen illustrates this principle by showing how even extensive reading logs can be redesigned to offer learners multiple pathways for participation and expression.

Thoughtful and Constructive Feedback

Feedback is one of the most powerful tools teachers have to influence learning, yet it can also be one of the most threatening (Tokuhama-Espinosa, 2021). When feedback is vague such as “good job” or overly directive such as “you must fix this,” learners may either dismiss it or feel anxious and defensive toward the teacher (Catrambone, et al., 2025). A Mind, Brain, and Education perspective reminds us that feedback works best when it lowers threat and directs attention to processes learners can control because it strengthens memory traces through constructive engagement (Tokuhama-Espinosa, 2011).

An example of constructive engagement is interactive dialogue rather than a one-way transmission, as it communicates to learners that they are part of the conversation and involved in their learning. Teachers can support this by asking students what they need to succeed, focusing on the task, the process of working on the task, and self-regulation strategies learners can use for future tasks (Immordino-Yang, 2015). Approaching feedback this way helps learners manage behavior and emotions, which are essential for learning and retention. Keeping a focus on what students do, and not who they are, encourages persistence and reinforces the concept of neuroplasticity that both abilities and skills can improve with practice and effort.

Language matters. Facilitative stems such as “You might consider…” or “One way to strengthen this could be…” shift the tone from judgment to advice. This reduces the perception of threat, calming the nervous system and making the brain more receptive to new information (Cozolino, 2013). Neuroscientific studies show that when learners perceive feedback as safe and constructive, the brain consolidates new connections more effectively, strengthening memory and motivation (Catrambone, et al., 2025).

Teacher Talk and Classroom Presence

The way teachers use their voices, bodies, and presence in the classroom shapes not only attention but also how safe and supported learners feel (Cozolino, 2013). Aiming for more student talk, while balancing it with expressive teacher input, is central to engagement (Tokuhama-Espinosa, 2021). When we vary our tone, use gestures and eye contact, and move physically closer to students, we signal care and create an atmosphere of energy and trust. Just as importantly, keeping language calm and respectful models the emotional regulation we hope learners will adopt (Immordino-Yang, 2015).

From a Mind, Brain, and Education perspective, these actions matter because learning is both social and emotional. When teachers display calm enthusiasm, students mirror it, which lowers anxiety and fosters participation. Expressive communication also captures attention by engaging the brain’s bottom-up processing. When we make shifts in voice, gesture, or movement, we can signal novelty and keep students alert. Meanwhile, showing interest in student well-being, listening to their problems, and being supportive when they have difficulties helps learners feel valued (Magee, 2025).

Try It Tomorrow: Teach Less, Coach More

Step 1: Ten-Word Instructions (Clarity and Focus)

Before starting an activity, give directions in ten words or fewer. For example: “Work in pairs. Compare answers. Write two differences in notes.” Short, clear instructions prevent overload and keep students on task.

Step 2: Visible Timer (Energy and Pacing)

Project or place a timer where everyone can see it. Tell students: “You’ve got three minutes to share ideas.” A timer, even a silent one, builds urgency and focus.

Step 3: Quick Turn-and-Talk (Student Voice)

Insert a short peer exchange mid-lesson: “Turn to your partner and ask, what’s the most surprising point so far?” This mini-discussion functions as a structured “brain break”, an intermittent break to refresh attention and as a language activity that promotes spontaneous target-language output. It encourages learners to reflect, negotiate meaning, and build confidence in speaking. 

Student-Student Relationships

For many learners, the biggest challenge is not the teacher, it is their peers. Learners need to feel that they belong, can participate as equals, and are supported by their peers. If we can achieve this, then peer interactions will generate more language, more practice, and more chances to notice and implicitly learn language. The following section introduces considerations for lesson and curriculum development.

Design Effective Collaborative Group Work

Predictability, fairness, and clear goals strengthen teacher–student relationships and equally apply when peers work together. The difference is that students are now responsible to one another rather than to the teacher. Interdependence means that if every learner shares their thoughts or holds a group role, participation becomes necessary rather than optional. Rotating roles such as researcher, note-taker, encourager, or presenter allows for equal contribution and anxiety reduction.

In the same way that feedback and clarity from the teacher lowers threat, group structures that include defined roles and are required to produce something create the same effect among peers. When students know the outcome and need each other to reach it, the brain’s reward systems make collaboration feel good, sustaining effort and attention. In this way, collaborative tasks become not just social activities but authentic opportunities for deeper language use and shared success.

Explicitly Teach and Model Interactional Skills (Structured Dialogue)

While teacher feedback and presence can guide interaction, the real work happens between peers. Learners often know the grammar or vocabulary needed, but falter when it comes to managing the flow of conversation. Silence happens not because they lack ideas, but because they are unsure how to signal agreement, ask for clarification, or extend a peer’s contribution. Interactional skills are the cohesive devices that sustain peer talk, and when students share responsibility for maintaining dialogue, engagement also increases.

These skills matter because they free learners from the constant worry of “what do I say next?” and shift their attention back to meaning. Having access to simple conversational strategies reduces cognitive load, lowers anxiety, and increases fluency. When one student asks, “Could you explain that another way?” or “So you mean…?”, they invite peers into a deeper exchange. In this way, dialogue becomes collaborative problem-solving rather than a series of disconnected turns. Over time, repeated use of such moves strengthens both confidence and the neural pathways that support memory and attention, making interaction smoother and more automatic. Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) studies indicate that effective interactions require learners to engage in meaning-focused interactions as it pushes them to notice gaps, negotiate meaning, and adjust their output (Benati, 2020).

Promote a Culture of Collaboration and Support: The “Tribal Classroom”

Cozolino (2014) writes about the tribal classroom. In such a classroom, beyond tasks and roles, the atmosphere of peer interaction determines whether students feel free to contribute or hold back. A classroom that functions like a small tribe, where members look out for one another, share responsibility, and critique ideas rather than people, creates the psychological safety needed for genuine participation. When learners know they will be supported rather than ridiculed, cortisol levels drop, and attention opens up.

Conflict, too, takes on a different meaning in this kind of culture. Instead of being avoided or feared, disagreement can be reframed as a chance to grow together, to refine thinking, and to test language in a supportive space. Shared norms, co-created with learners, help anchor this mindset: patience, encouragement, and collective responsibility. Over time, such norms reduce anxiety and build resilience, while celebrating joint achievements fosters a sense of belonging. The tribal classroom becomes a place where persistence feels natural, and where students draw energy not only from the teacher but from each other.

Leverage Real-World Relevance and Personal Interest

Students are more willing to speak, listen, and persist when the task at hand connects to their lives. Relevance turns abstract classroom work into something with purpose, releasing dopamine and sustaining attention in ways that routine drills rarely achieve. When peers collaborate on projects tied to their community, career aspirations, or personal passions, they can begin to imagine themselves as language users beyond the classroom walls. This forward-looking stance not only motivates but also deepens the quality of interaction, since learners feel they are working toward something that matters.

Personal interest also brings equity to the group dynamic. A learner who may be quiet in grammar exercises can suddenly take the lead when the topic touches on their hobby, cultural background, or local knowledge. In this way, relevance not only boosts individual engagement but redistributes voice within the group. Peers begin to recognize one another as sources of expertise, strengthening mutual respect and collaboration. Tasks designed with this in mind transform group work into an authentic rehearsal for the real world, where language is always tied to purpose (Tomlinson, 2023).

Integrate the Three R’s: Rules, Roles, and Routines

Group work is most effective when learners know what to do, how to share responsibility, and how the activity will run. Clear rules such as respect contributions, listen actively, and challenge ideas—not people help to establish expectations. Roles give everyone, from confident to quiet students, a reason to contribute. Routines, such as those introduced by Harvard’s Project Zero, provide structure for transitions and help-seeking, so the group doesn’t lose focus.

Simple structures make a big difference. Predictability reduces anxiety, balanced roles prevent students from relying on others to do their work, and routines free up mental energy for the task. Combined, the Three R’s turn small groups into real teams, sustaining practice and promoting both equity and engagement.

Sustaining Relationship-Driven Learning and Addressing Challenges

Relationships in the classroom are never static because they shift with time, task, and group dynamics. What worked smoothly one week can stagger the next. For this reason, teachers need to monitor participation patterns, rotate groups, and adjust roles continuously. A task that appears to fail is not wasted effort but data that can be used to refine the structure of the activity rather than its goal.

Sustaining a relationship-centered classroom also calls for teacher reflection. Simple weekly check-ins that ask questions such as “What was engaging? What blocked engagement? What small change will I try?” can help teachers monitor and respond to the social life of the classroom. These small cycles of observation and adjustment mirror the very processes we want to model for learners. Reflection, adaptation, and persistence.

Yet the challenges are real. Time is short, budgets are tight, and many training programs still emphasize subject expertise over the psychology and neuroscience of learning. As teachers, we need less abstract theory and more practical toolkits in the form of low-preparation, high-result routines. Micro-routines give teachers accessible ways to build trust, maintain energy, and foster engagement. In MBE terms, teachers themselves are coaching learners in neuroplasticity through trying, reflecting, and revising.

Conclusion

A central finding in research on Mind, Brain, and Education (Immordino-Yang, 2015) is that relationships in the classroom are not “soft extras”; they are a crucial part of the infrastructure of attention, memory, motivation, and language growth. When teacher–student and student–student relationships are strong, the learning system remains open and responsive, giving learners the safety to take risks and the support to persist. Engagement can be deliberately crafted. Predictable routines, balanced group roles, structured interactions, constructive feedback, and personally relevant tasks are small, research-based practices that can positively change the classroom climate.
